Dyslexia
If your child struggles with literacy, an assessment can often be the first step in understanding the obstacles that are getting in the way of their progress and the key to unlocking their talents and self-belief. A diagnostic assessment is required for a formal diagnosis of dyslexia and would entail additional information being provided from home and school to obtain a holistic profile of the individual’s strengths and weaknesses.

What is the difference between an assessment from an Educational Psychologist assessment and a Specialist Teacher assessment? Both Specialist Teachers and Educational Psychologists are able to assess for dyslexia. Both Specialist Teachers and Educational Psychologists can make recommendations about how the individual can best be supported. A Specialist teacher has wide experience of teaching and usually has a better understanding of the classroom environment and therefore can make more specific recommendations, but this does depend on the background and experience of each individual assessor. We would advise using an Educational Psychologist if your child is likely to need an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) in the future. Information copied from http://www.bdaydyslexia.org.uk

How will a dyslexia label help my child?Having a dyslexia diagnosis will ensure your child's school are in a strong position to offer support. In addition, many learners find a diagnosis can offer a sense of relief and can help to combat issues of low self-esteem. There can also be financial benefits to having a 'label', with higher education establishments providing funding and assistive technology to students wanting to go on to higher education.

What does the assessment involve?
A dyslexia assessment involves:
Pre-assessment
Initial contact over email to discuss whether an assessment is right for you.

A pre-assessment questionnaire will then be carried out to gather information about the learner. Information will also be requested from the learner’s school.

Please note it is recommended that a vision and hearing test has been carried out in the last two years to rule out any other causes for difficulties with literacy.
Assessment
The assessment takes approximately 3 hours to complete and will include a wide range of tests such as attainment, phonological processing, spelling, working memory, and visual/verbal underlying abilities. The assessment will be completed at my private residence.
Post Assessment
After the assessment, a summary of the initial findings will be given within 48 hours via email.

The final report (25 sides of A4 approx) will explain the results in detail. Strengths and areas for development are outlined, and strategies and interventions to support your child are given. If a profile of dyslexia is found, the assessment offers an official diagnosis and can be used for exam access requirements. Please note that this can take up to 3 weeks to receive the full report but it is usually less.

After you receive the report. A post-report discussion is available (if required over phone/email) to discuss and answer any final questions.
